The Southwest Job Network (SJN), previously known as Scottsdale Job Network, in partnership with Glendale Community College (GCC) is hosting a West Valley seminar and networking event, "Slow Networking Monday, July 13, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Glendale Community College-Student Union, Room 104, located at 6000 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale.

The goal of this seminar is to educate job seekers on how to conduct a mutually beneficial Slow Networking meeting. During the event, participants will learn step-by-step techniques for executing effective 20-30 minute discussions that result in professional referrals, job leads and new network connections. This event will also help job seekers expand their network by building new connections with fellow workshop attendees. Workshop registrants should come to the event with a prepared elevator speech. She has extensive human resources management experience in diverse corporate and work site environments, including small business through Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 companies. Throughout her career she has created HR infrastructure and led project teams aimed at starting or working in a small business.

Jeffrey Taylor After a corporate career with Citibank and Peat Marwick, Jeffrey read an issue of Entrepreneur and became one. During his successful consulting career he published two textbooks which are still used by global financial institutions. In the last couple of years he has lectured on Sarbanes-Oxley to major financial institutions, developed business plans for start-up companies, prepared companies to go public, helped companies raise both private and public capital and made independent movies. His new book, Going from W2 to 1099?, will be published this summer.

SJN will be offering a special workshop for job seekers, Exploring Your Passion--and Putting it to Work, on Tues, April 29 at Temple Chai. The program runs from 9 AM-4 PM and has a limited enrollment of 30 participants.

"Passions," as we often refer to it, was created and has been presented to job seekers for several years by SJN Board Member and Facilitator, Maria Wojtczak. Read about the focus of the workshop:

Job seekers often limit themselves to what they have always done because it was the career that defined them for many years. They tend to lose sight of their many gifts, interests, strengths, and wealth of skills they developed through their life experience. This workshop utilizes proven tools to help individuals identify their strengths, talents and preferences - what they're basically good at and really enjoy doing! and can prove to be useful in opening up job search options.

Because of the need to purchase booklets, binders and printed materials, this workshop has a fee of $25.

For now, the need is for admin support to:

set up a system for taking reservations and payments (We are looking into the internet tools to take reservations and payments via PayPal.)

respond to inquiries about the program

help Maria set up the room on the day of the event (Putting out books, props, materials, flyers--NOT setting up the tables)

Success comes thru action

I attended the Scottsdale Job Network meeting on Tuesday and when I left I felt empowered to move my job search project into high gear. As I reached the parking lot, I looked at my watch and to my surprise, it was 11:45. I was having such a good time conversing with other job seekers and volunteers that I would not have guessed that I had invested 3+ hours of my day at this event. I volunteered to assist with the Operations portion of the meeting and it felt good to have a small hand in helping out.

About midway thru Jim O'Hara's presentation, it dawned on me that I've been doing many things right, but I've also made some mistakes in regard to my job search activities. I'm learning to keep on task, track my activity, follow simple steps and let the positive results appear.

All in all, it was a fun meeting with loads of great content and another opportunity to meet new people and get new ideas.

Yesterday I attended the monthly meeting of the Scottsdale Job Network. I served as a volunteer greeter and enjoyed the opportunity to see existing members and meet the newcomers. The presentation on self promotion by Connie Kadansky was outstanding. I came away with many ideas and action items, but the one thing that I really connected with was the importance to reach out and be seen for the unique person I really am.
