Scottsdale Job Network Curriculum Meeting - Creating Leads and Networking

Scottsdale Job Network Meeting

Scottsdale Jobs Network

Join us on Tuesday October 21, 2008 9:00 am - 11:30 am for "Creating Leads, Networking"

Join us for NETWORKING at 9 AM and then for the fourth in a series of six programs developed for the SJN Curriculum on the Job Search Process, "Creating Leads, Networking."

I called a friend of mine, John, and asked him if there was an opening at his company. He said he wasnt sure, but didnt think so. I also called three other friends and told them I was looking for work. I asked them that if they heard of anyone who was hiring, would they please let me know. I spent the whole morning on the phone networking. Sound familiar? Most people know what networking isand dont do it OR some think they are networking, but arent doing it correctly. Did you know that 75-80% of jobs are attained through networking? Believe it or notit is true!

Join us when George Fleming will take you through the steps of the networking process! It is not as difficult as you might think. The best part about networking is that it gives you more control of your job search. Learning to network correctly will change your attitude toward this very important area of the job search process. --- come and find out how!

Thank you,
Bill Austin

Be realistic. Say that, while you would expect to meet pressing demands and pull your own weight from the first day, it might take six months to a year before you could expect to know the organization and its needs well enough to make a major contribution.

Have you noticed that Arizona doesn't have a port? That we started realizing how important global business is a few years behind the leaders? That our economy may still be too dependent on real estate?

Is Arizona doomed because we came to the table late, don't have direct access to international ports and don't have enough direct international air connections?

John Barry of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport will shed light on these important questions. He'll update us on what's happening and piece it all together for us, and hopefully find some hope for Arizona Business.

Passions Workshop - Finding Your Passion - Putting it to Work

Scottsdale Job Network Workshop

Scottsdale Job Network

Exploring Your Passion--and Putting it to Work

Passions Workshop

SJN will be offering a special workshop for job seekers, Exploring Your Passion--and Putting it to Work, on Tues, April 29 at Temple Chai. The program runs from 9 AM-4 PM and has a limited enrollment of 30 participants.

"Passions," as we often refer to it, was created and has been presented to job seekers for several years by SJN Board Member and Facilitator, Maria Wojtczak. Read about the focus of the workshop:

Job seekers often limit themselves to what they have always done because it was the career that defined them for many years. They tend to lose sight of their many gifts, interests, strengths, and wealth of skills they developed through their life experience. This workshop utilizes proven tools to help individuals identify their strengths, talents and preferences - what they're basically good at and really enjoy doing! and can prove to be useful in opening up job search options.

Because of the need to purchase booklets, binders and printed materials, this workshop has a fee of $25.

For now, the need is for admin support to:

set up a system for taking reservations and payments (We are looking into the internet tools to take reservations and payments via PayPal.)

respond to inquiries about the program

help Maria set up the room on the day of the event (Putting out books, props, materials, flyers--NOT setting up the tables)

Success comes thru action

I attended the Scottsdale Job Network meeting on Tuesday and when I left I felt empowered to move my job search project into high gear. As I reached the parking lot, I looked at my watch and to my surprise, it was 11:45. I was having such a good time conversing with other job seekers and volunteers that I would not have guessed that I had invested 3+ hours of my day at this event. I volunteered to assist with the Operations portion of the meeting and it felt good to have a small hand in helping out.

About midway thru Jim O'Hara's presentation, it dawned on me that I've been doing many things right, but I've also made some mistakes in regard to my job search activities. I'm learning to keep on task, track my activity, follow simple steps and let the positive results appear.

All in all, it was a fun meeting with loads of great content and another opportunity to meet new people and get new ideas.

I want to recommend a book that I read a few weeks ago. The title is "Your Survival Strategies Are Killing You" by Martha Borst. http://www.marthaborst.com/marthas-book.php

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Stay Positive - Have a support system

Yesterday I attended the monthly meeting of the Scottsdale Job Network. I served as a volunteer greeter and enjoyed the opportunity to see existing members and meet the newcomers. The presentation on self promotion by Connie Kadansky was outstanding. I came away with many ideas and action items, but the one thing that I really connected with was the importance to reach out and be seen for the unique person I really am. The concept of using your own style to be memorable is beneficial in all areas of life, not just for job transition. More to follow

SJN MEETING: TUES, JAN 15, 2008

Self-Promotion: IS IT THE missing ingredient in your job search?

Some of the most highly-paid and powerful people did not attain their positions by being the most technically competent. They did it through purposeful self-promotion. Some people are natural promoters. They are born with the instinct to self-promotion. For others, often the most loyal, motivated and deserving self-promotion is emotionally difficult. They are rendered invisible by a spirit-crushing condition called fear of self-promotion. You will learn the three keys to visibility management in your job search.

Guest speaker, Connie Kadansky, is the President of Exceptional Sales Performance, LLC an international consulting and performance improvement practice. She is a nationally recognized expert in identifying and eliminating Sales Call Reluctance. Call Reluctance can neutralize any career. Connie has a proven track record for increased sales from brand new salespeople to veteran producers in diverse industries, i.e., financial services, insurance, print media, software, public broadcasting and executive search. http://www.exceptionalsales.com/

There is no guarantee of employment either directly through this group or as a result of association with SJN. We do, however, provide education in the job search process and all attendees have the opportunity to meet and work with people who offer support and guidance during employment transition.

The value of SJN lies in the skills, business networks and personal passions of our members. Membership is open to everyone willing to share their skills and anyone interested in local networking or in need of employment transition support.
